Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit

Cardiac rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program at Mater Dei Hospital that holistically addresses several factors in cardiovascular disease prevention and rehabilitation. Lifestyle modification is an important pillar in the educational component, addressing nutrition, smoking cessation, physical activity, amongst other cardiovascular risk factors. The team also helps address patient concerns pertaining to mood disturbances, driving restrictions, employment issues and sexual activity. The exercise component attempts to institute lifestyle change by helping patients incorporate physical activity in their daily life. Substantial improvements in psychological and physical wellbeing when both these approaches are adopted will ultimately translate into a better quality of life and longevity. Research has also shown that cardiac rehabilitation substantially decreases the likelihood of a life-threatening cardiac event (heart failure, heart attack) or cardiac intervention (stent, surgery, pacemaker, etc.).

It is delivered by a specialist multi-disciplinary cardiac rehabilitation team which includes cardiologists, nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians, psychotherapist, smoking cessation specialists.

Cardiac rehabilitation is available to people who have had:

      • a heart attack
  • a coronary angioplasty (balloon) and/or stent
  • heart surgery including coronary artery bypass surgery, valve repair/replacement and adult congenital heart defects
  • some people who have angina or heart failure
  • some people who have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) inserted
  • a cardiac arrest.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit is located at MDH in the Green Block, Level -1
