Medical Assessment Unit 3

Where is Medical Assessment Unit 3 (MAU3)?

MAU3 is located on the ground floor of the Red block, above the Accident & Emergency Department (A&E).

What is MAU3?

MAU3 is a 24 bedded mixed ward that caters for patients coming from A&E and other wards. The ward is divided in eight monitored beds, twelve normal beds, one twin room and a single room for special cases.
The majority of the patients stay for a short period of time, until they are moved to another ward or discharged back to the community. Patients may also be transferred to MAU3 for monitoring from other wards. Most of the cases admitted require frequent observations and tests.

Who will care for these patients?

Care is done by the nursing team aided by (nursing) carers and other professionals from a multidisciplinary team. All the medical, neurology and cardiac consultants can admit patients to this ward, and thus can be a very busy place especially in the mornings during ward rounds.

Being a short stay ward, meals are not ordered for the day after (as per other wards) but there is a choice form three meals that one can have (according to the patient's condition and whether they suffer from certain conditions). In some instances special meals are ordered due to the latter reason.

Breakfast is at approximately 07.00.
Lunch at about 11.15.
Dinner at 17.15.

Patients (health permitting) and relatives may also eat at the small pantry and television room for more privacy. Since this is a multi-purpose room it is essantial to keep the room clean.

Visiting the Ward

On admission , accompanying persons are given cards with information about visiting time, ward name and contact numbers, as well as the phone number of the telephone next to each bed so that communication can be done on a personal level.

There are restrictions on property or valuables and other items that a patient may bring for safety reasons.
Members of the staff will ask for contact numbers of relatives in case of urgent communication.
Ward visiting times are as follows:

Monday to Sunday (including public holidays):
11:30 to 13:00 (2 visitors at any one time)
15:00 to 20:00 (2 visitors at any one time)

Special permits outside these times may be given at the discretion of the nurse in charge. Due to the exigencies of the ward, in some instances visitors may be asked to leave the patient's room.
Patients may be contacted at home and asked by their consultant to attend this ward. In such cases, patients are to wait for the doctor in the TV room.

MAU3 can be contacted on +356 25454020 or +356 25454017. Although anyone can call the ward for information on their loved ones, the information given will be limited due to confidentiality and ethical reasons.
