Where is Ophthalmic Ward Day Unit?
Ophthalmic Day unit, is at present, sharing same ward, with MITU Day unit.
It can be found on the 3rd floor of the Blue Block. It is easier to reach this ward from the Day Care Unit entrance rather than the hospital's main entrance. Pottering services are available, if required, from both hospital entrances.
What is Ophthalmic Ward Day Unit?
Ophthalmic Ward Day Unit, now caters for patients, who are to do Day Case surgery ONLY.  

Cases requiring procedure under General Anaesthesia, are taken to Theatre from ward, but then, will be nursed in another surgical ward, post procedure. The main Ophthalmic procedures include cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, Squints, Vitrectomies (for vitreous haemorrhages and retinal detachments). Other Ophthalmic surgical procedures are done as required. Some other minor procedures are done in the Ward Theatre.

At the Ophthalmic ward, patients are assessed prior to surgery by a nurse and doctors. Verbal and written information about the specific surgery and post-operative care is given to the patient.

Till now, Ophthalmic Casualties are seen in this unit, every day from 1pm till 7am of next day.   
On Sundays and Public Holidays, they are here for 24 hrs.

There are 8 consultants in this ward – Mr M. Vella (Chairman of Dept), Mr T. Fenech, Mr F. Mercieca, Mr M. Gouder, Mr J Grech Hardie, Mr F. Carbonaro, Mr M Galea, Mr B Vella Briffa. Each consultant has a team of Doctors assigned to the firm, to assist in the care of patients.

Who will look after me?
A team of nurses managed by a Charge Nurse, will care for the patients whilst in unit.

Note:  Day case patients, especially PM Lists, are advised to bring a light snack, as waiting times, vary.
