This bathing water monitoring programme is organised and co-ordinated by the Water Regulatory and Auditing Unit (WRAU) in conjunction with the Health Inspectorate Services Officials at the Gozo Region within the Environmental Health Directorate (EHD).​

A photo of a sampling bottle to sampling rod.The weekly reports contain results of tests that are carried out on samples collected from official bathing sites around the Maltese Islands during the official bathing season which starts from the third week of May and ends in   the third week of October.

The Public Health Laboratory Services (PHLS) within the Environmental Health Directorate carry out all tests for microbiological parameters, as required under the Management of Bathing Water Quality Regulations, 2008 (L.N. 125 of 2008 (MT) as amended by L.N. 237 of 2011 (MT​).

Since 27th May 2011 the Commission published an Implementation Decision 2011/321/EU (MT) establishing, pursuant to Directive 2006/7/EC (MT​) of the European Parliament and of the Council, a symbol for information to the public on bathing water classification and any bathing prohibition or advice against bathing.​
