Water Regulatory and Auditing Unit

The Water Regulatory and Auditing Unit, WRAU,  was set-up to mainly focus on the regulatory obligations for water quality which includes both waters intended for human consumption and bathing waters.

Main Duties of the Water Regulatory and Auditing Unit are:

  • To organise and co-ordinate: 

Service Water Monitoring Programmes
Bathing Water Monitoring Programmes

  • Perform Audits at all Public/Commercial premises with reference to the legal obligations for Legionella Control in terms of Legal Notice 5 of 2006 as amended by Legal Notice 262 of 2006 and Legal Notice 6 of 2006 and for Swimming Pools in terms of Legal Notice 129 of 2005 as amended by Legal Notice 135 of 2008.
  • Registration of Private Water Supplies, Cooling Towers and Public/Commercial Swimming Pools.
  • Investigations involving Water Borne Diseases, mainly of confirmed cases of Legionnaires Disease.
  • Review and give its feedback obo the Environmental Health Directorate (EHD) on Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), IPPC applications and Environmental Permits as part of the consultation process by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).
  • To produce reliable and standardised information and statistical data as required by the respective EU Directives.
  • To identify, prepare and evaluate suitable health measures guidelines and legislation in relation to water quality.
  • To liaise with other relevant national, regional, and global water related programmes and initiatives.
  • To help educate the general public on safe waters that may directly affect their state of health.
