The Public Health Laboratory is a section within the Environmental Health Directorate, which falls under the responsibility of the Department for Health Regulation within the Ministry for Health.
This laboratory is a food, feed and environmental testing laboratory and is responsible for checking compliance with relevant local and European Union legislation requirements. It comprises microbiological, chemical and radionuclide testing facilities.
Tasks carried out by the laboratory include:
- Monitoring/surveillance programmes
- Investigation of suspected food poisoning cases
- Investigation of fraud involving foodstuffs
- Official Testing services
- National Reference Laboratory services for nineteen fields/parameters for food, animal feed and water
- Collaboration with Competent Authorities and the University of Malta
- Providing professional advice and interpretation of results
